Today’s a good day to review some tips for avoiding utility scams:
Never pay with prepaid cards, gift cards, or wire transfers, and ignore threats of immediate disconnection.
Never give personal information. Legitimate companies will not call you to ask for your credit card or social security number over the phone.
Verify any request by calling your utility company directly using the number on your bill, not one provided by the caller. Call us at 781-948-1100.
Be wary of high-pressure tactics or unexpected visitors.
Utilities do not call demanding immediate payment to avoid instant, same-day shutoff. They typically send written notice by mail first.
