Prepare for Storms
- Keep flashlights and extra batteries on hand and make sure mobile devices are fully charged so you can stay connected in the event of an outage.
- If you see a downed power line, keep away from it and anything it may be in contact with. Call Norwood Light at 781-948-1100 or 911.
- Power generators used during an outage must be operated outdoors to prevent the buildup of deadly carbon monoxide.
- Customers who depend on electrically powered life support equipment, such as a respirator, should contact Norwood Light at 781-948-1100 to request a designation as a life support customer. In a medical emergency, always dial 911.
- If you lose power, turn off any appliances that were on when the power went off, but leave a light or two on so you will know when power is restored.
- Be sure to check on elderly family members, neighbors and others who may need assistance during an outage.
Prepare for High Winds
- Secure items outside, such as lawn furniture and trash cans, that could be picked up by high winds and hurt someone.
- Anchor objects that would be unsafe to bring inside, such as gas grills and propane tanks.
- Trim or remove trees close enough to fall on your home. Review insurance policies.
- Protect windows with permanent storm shutters or pre-cut plywood.
Prepare for Flooding

- Stockpile protective materials such as plastic sheeting and sandbags if you’re in an area prone to flooding.
- Consider installing a sump pump with battery backup.
- Consider elevating the heating system, water heater, and electric panel.
